What the Superhuman + Fathom Acquisition Means for Fathom Users

Last updated: October 1, 2026. The story is still developing, and we'll update this page as Superhuman and Fathom share more.
Fathom's help center now opens with a banner reading "Fathom is now part of Superhuman." Superhuman announced the deal on September 14, 2026, and neither company disclosed the price. Fathom's announcement says nothing changes today, and we'll update the page if either company shares more.
What Happened?
Superhuman bought Fathom to bring meeting data into its productivity suite. The company, which renamed itself from Grammarly in October 2025, runs apps for email, calendars, documents, and databases, plus AI agents across them. In its release, "Superhuman Acquires Fathom, AI Notetaker," Superhuman says Fathom's meeting data will help Superhuman Go, its proactive AI assistant, and the agents inside it.
Superhuman's own example shows the plan in action. An agent reads a standup transcript, drafts status updates in Superhuman Docs, and asks a project manager to approve them.
Did You Know? Superhuman tested its own notetaker with select users earlier in 2026 before buying Fathom. CEO Shishir Mehrotra told TechCrunch the test showed him how hard a great notetaker is to build. |
Is Fathom Still Free?
Yes, Fathom is still free today, and neither Fathom nor Superhuman has said anything about the free plan's long-term future.
Fathom's generous free plan drew more than 400,000 monthly active users, TechCrunch reports. A September 2025 help center article explains the logic, since free users build brand awareness and bring in leads for Fathom's paid plans. A larger paid suite could change those economics, though neither company has announced any change.

What Changes for Existing Users?
Your day-to-day use stays the same. Fathom's announcement promises the "same app, same login, same product experience," and Superhuman has shared no timeline for folding Fathom into its suite.
For now, the Superhuman Fathom acquisition leaves your login, call recordings, and meeting reviews unchanged. You can also keep receiving the same AI meeting notes and summaries after each call.
One connection already runs. The Fathom connector for Superhuman Go lets you pull your meeting summaries, transcripts, action items, and recording links. Superhuman's community post calls the news a heads-up and promises more detail as plans develop.
What Happens to My Data and Privacy?
The Superhuman Fathom acquisition leaves the terms on your past recordings in place. Under "Merger, Sale, or Other Asset Transfers," Fathom's privacy policy, last updated August 16, 2026, keeps your data under the policy in effect when Fathom collected it.
The same policy lets a revised version take effect the day Fathom posts it, and your continued use counts as agreement. It also allows material changes to how Fathom uses data it already holds, with notice Fathom says it may send.
On training, Fathom's privacy policy, last updated August 16, 2026, says the company may use de-identified data from your meetings to train its in-house AI models, depending on your settings, with an opt-out in your account settings.
Will Superhuman train AI on my Fathom meetings?
Neither Superhuman's announcement nor Fathom's addresses data handling or model training. Fathom's current privacy policy says it does not authorize third parties such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google to train their models on your meeting content. Superhuman's own privacy policy, effective July 6, 2026, covers Grammarly, Docs, Superhuman Go, and Superhuman Mail, but does not mention Fathom yet.
Pro Tip: Open My Settings in Fathom and set the model training opt-out how you want before your next call. On Team plans and above, admins can apply the choice to every user from Organization Settings. (Source: Fathom Privacy Policy, August 2026) |

Should You Switch?
Switch only if the deal changes something you rely on. Staying makes sense if Fathom meets your needs or your team already works in Superhuman. Moving makes sense if you depend on the free tier, want a standalone meeting tool, or work under strict privacy rules.
If you live in Superhuman Mail or Superhuman Docs, the Superhuman Fathom acquisition could put your meeting notes one step from your inbox. If your budget hinges on the answer to "is Fathom still free," line up a backup before any pricing page changes.
Client calls raise the stakes on data. Review your Fathom privacy settings first, and our explainer on whether your notetaker trains on your data lists the settings worth checking in any tool.
Did You Know? Fathom added a bot-less meeting mode in April 2026, TechCrunch reported, and its pricing page still labels bot-free capture as beta. Superhuman's announcement lists bot-free capture among the strengths Fathom brings to the deal. |

How to Export Fathom Data
You can export Fathom data one meeting at a time with Fathom's built-in tools, or in bulk through Fathom's API or a paid tool built on it. Choose the route that matches the size of your library.
- To save a recording, open the meeting, click the three-dot menu, and choose Download Video for an MP4 file, per Fathom's download guide.
- To save a transcript, click Copy Transcript above it and paste the text into a document you control, per Fathom's transcript guide.
- To move hundreds of transcripts at once, use a paid tool built on Fathom's API, such as TranscriptExporter.
Pro Tip: Finish your export before you request account deletion. Fathom's privacy policy commits only to commercially reasonable efforts to delete your data within 30 days of the request. (Source: Fathom Privacy Policy, August 2026) |

If You Want an Independent Alternative: Fireflies
If the Superhuman Fathom acquisition has you weighing a switch, Fireflies runs as an independent company and bills itself as the #1 AI Teammate for meetings, email, Slack, CRM, and work. Its permanent free plan includes unlimited transcription, 3 AI summaries a month, and 800 minutes of storage per seat.
Fathom may train its in-house models on de-identified meeting content unless you opt out. Fireflies puts its position in writing.
Fireflies.ai does not use customer data to train any AI models. Your personal data is never used to train AI models. Users own their data.
The Fireflies security page lists its compliance coverage, with HIPAA available on the Enterprise plan with a signed BAA and Private Storage enabled. The Fireflies bot joins Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams calls, while the desktop app records without a bot and the Chrome extension covers Google Meet. On Pro, Business, and Enterprise, Fireflies also captures meeting video, so the recording, transcript, and notes live in one place.
Free accounts include limited AskFred access for questions across your meetings or a follow-up draft from any call. Fireflies Talk adds unlimited dictation on every Fireflies plan, including the free plan. Hold Fn on Mac or Ctrl + Win on Windows to dictate into any app. On Pro, AI Skills draft follow-ups and update your CRM after every meeting. Email Assistant drafts replies and helps clear your inbox.
To switch, sign up with your Google or Microsoft account and allow calendar access. Setup then offers a 7-day Business trial, which requires a credit card, and clicking the ✕ keeps you on the free plan. Each account connects one calendar, Google or Outlook.
By default, Fireflies joins every calendar meeting with a web-conference link and emails the recap to everyone on the invite, and you can change both settings anytime. Once you export Fathom data, you can upload the recordings to Fireflies for transcription. Learn how to migrate your meetings from Fathom to Fireflies.

What to Do This Week
The Superhuman Fathom acquisition leaves your account untouched today, and the next revision of Fathom's privacy policy is the date to watch. Set your training opt-out the way you want it, export the meetings you can't afford to lose, and check Fathom's policy page when it updates.
If Fathom still fits your workflow, keep using it. If you want an independent Fathom alternative with a permanent free plan, Fireflies is ready when your next meeting starts.
