How to Transcribe Google Meet Meetings (4 Methods, Including Free Options)

Ayush Kudesia

Google Meet is one of the most widely used video conferencing platforms, especially among Google Workspace teams. Its popularity among professionals stems from its smooth integration with Google Workspace.

However, keeping track of what was said and decided during virtual meetings is very hard. Manual note-taking is tedious and can often lead to missed details.

To solve this, Google Meet offers two kinds of native transcription:

  • A standard plain-text transcript
  • AI-powered notes through Gemini in Meet

Both generally require a paid Google Workspace business tier or a Google AI Premium subscription. But if you are on a free account or need something that works outside the Google ecosystem, this guide has you covered.

In this article, we'll look at four methods to transcribe your Google Meet sessions:

  • Method 1: Google Meet native transcription and Gemini in Meet notes
  • Method 2: Chrome extension transcribers
  • Method 3: The Fireflies Meeting Bot
  • Method 4: Transcribing a recorded Google Meet

Let’s begin.

Method 1: Google Meet Native Transcription and Gemini Notes

As I mentioned earlier, you have two native transcription options inside Google Meet.

The first of these, standard transcription, gives you a plain-text, word-for-word record of everything said in the meeting. Gemini in Meet goes further, generating a meeting summary with action items and key decisions that you can act on right away.

To use either one, your admin needs to enable them in the Google Admin Console first. If you don't see the option in your meeting, that's likely why.

How to enable standard transcription in Google Meet

  1. Join your meeting using a desktop browser.
  2. Click the Activities or Meeting Tools icon in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Click Transcripts, and then Start transcription.
  4. A popup will ask you to confirm. Click Start.

A red Transcripts badge will now appear at the top of the screen, letting all participants know the meeting is being transcribed. Once the meeting ends, Google Meet saves the transcript to the organizer's Google Drive and emails a link to all hosts and co-hosts.

How to enable Gemini notes in Google Meet

  1. Start or join a scheduled Google Meet.
  2. Click the Take notes with Gemini icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Click Start taking notes.

Gemini will notify all participants that notes are being taken. When the call is done, it saves a Google Doc with your summary, timestamped notes, and next steps to your Drive and attaches it to the Calendar invite.

As of April 2026, Google Meet requires you to have explicit consent from all participants before note-taking begins.

Which Google Workspace plans include these features?

Not every Google Workspace plan includes these features. Here is what each tier gives you access to.

Feature

Plans Required

Standard transcription

Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Plus

Gemini in Meet notes

Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Google AI Pro/Ultra

Free and Business Starter

Neither feature available

As with any native tool, there are limitations that might affect how well this works for your team:

  • Standard transcripts require a paid Google Workspace plan like Business Standard or Enterprise. Free accounts and the Business Starter tier do not support them. Gemini notes require Business Standard or above.
  • An IT admin must enable transcripts in the Google Admin Console before anyone on the team can use them. Smaller teams without technical support may find this challenging to figure out.
  • Gemini in Meet currently supports 8 languages including English, Spanish, French, and Japanese. Teams working in other languages will not get AI-generated summaries.
  • Google Meet offers fewer built-in app integrations than platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams. You can still connect tools like Slack and Salesforce through extensions, but it is not native.
  • Without Gemini, transcripts are plain text only. You will not get summaries, action items, or key takeaways automatically.

Method 2: Transcribe Google Meet Using the Fireflies Chrome Extension

If the Workspace plan requirement is a dealbreaker, the Fireflies Chrome extension is your next best option. It works on any Google account, free or paid, and does not require any admin setup.

Basically, it is a lightweight tool that runs directly in your browser, capturing everything said and giving you a full transcript and summary when the meeting ends.

How Fireflies' Chrome Extension works for Google Meet

Here's how you can set up the extension.

  1. Go to the Chrome Web Store and search for "Fireflies: AI meeting notes."
  2. Click Add to Chrome to install it.
  3. Click the puzzle piece icon in your browser toolbar and pin the Fireflies icon so it stays visible.
  4. Click the pinned icon and select Continue with Google to sign in.

Once configured, choose from one of these two ways to record your meetings.

Manual recording

  1. Join your Google Meet.
  2. Click the pinned Fireflies icon in your toolbar.
  3. Click Start Recording when you are ready.
  4. Click Stop Recording or leave the meeting when you are done.

Auto-capture

  1. Open the Fireflies extension and click the three-dot menu.
  2. Toggle Auto-capture meetings to ON.
  3. Fireflies will now start recording automatically every time you join a Google Meet.

Note: If auto-capture is on and your Fireflies dashboard is also set to send the bot to your meetings, both will trigger and you will end up with duplicate transcripts. Turn off one depending on whether you want a bot-free or video-recorded session

During the meeting

While the meeting is running, you can open the Live Assist panel to get a live transcript and add timestamps to key moments as they happen. Just click the Fireflies icon in your toolbar to open the panel, and use AskFred to ask questions or get quick summaries in real time

When to use the Chrome extension vs. the Fireflies bot

The extension is a solid option if Google Meet is your primary meeting platform. But if you are looking for video recording or cross-platform support, the Fireflies bot is the way to go.

The Fireflies bot is an AI notetaker that joins your meetings as a participant and transcribes the conversation. It also records video and syncs your notes to your CRM after every call. Fireflies works across Zoom, Teams, and Meet.

Method 3: Transcribe Google Meet Using the Fireflies Bot

The Fireflies bot is a dedicated AI notetaker that joins your Google Meet sessions as a participant. You can invite it to your calendar events to automatically transcribe, record, and summarize every call.

How to connect Fireflies to Google Meet

There are three ways to get the Fireflies bot into your meetings.

Automatically via calendar

  1. Log into your Fireflies account using your Google account.
  2. Go to your dashboard and click the auto-join settings in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose your preferred setting:
    • All meetings with a web conference link
    • Only meetings that you own
    • Only meetings with participants from a specific domain
    • Only meetings with participants outside your domain
    • Only when you manually invite [email protected]

Note: If you want unlimited transcription on the free plan, toggle Enable Unlimited Free Transcription on your Fireflies dashboard.

Manual invite

  1. Go to your Google Calendar and create a new event or edit an existing one.
  2. Make sure the meeting includes a valid Google Meet link.
  3. In the Add guests field, type and add [email protected].
  4. Click Save.

Fireflies will join a few minutes before the scheduled start time.

Add to a live meeting

Already in a meeting and want Fireflies to join?

  1. Go to your Fireflies dashboard and click Add to live meeting.
  2. Enter your Google Meet link.
  3. Select your meeting language. Fireflies also offers auto-language detection if you are not sure (you can enable this under Settings > Recording and Privacy > Meeting Language).
  4. Click Start Capturing.

What Fireflies captures during a Google Meet

Once Fireflies joins your call, it gets to work immediately. Here is what you get after every meeting:

  • 95% accurate word-for-word transcript with speaker labels and timestamps
  • Full audio recording with background noise filtered out
  • Video and screen share capture including presentations, slides, and documents shared during the call
  • Native Google Meet text chat messages tied to their corresponding timestamps
  • Talk-time analytics showing how long each person spoke, their pace, and pauses in the conversation.
  • Filler word tracking so you can see how often speakers use words like "um" or "like"
  • Sentiment analysis mapping positive, neutral, and cautious moments across the call
  • Topic Tracker so that you can automatically flag mentions of pricing, competitors, or next steps
  • Calendar metadata showing who was scheduled versus who actually attended

What the output looks like

After the meeting, Fireflies emails you a link to the processed file in your Notebook. Here is a sample of what a typical client call summary looks like.

Free plan availability

Fireflies offers a free plan with unlimited transcription for Google Meet meetings, up to 800 minutes of storage. To activate it, toggle Enable Unlimited Free Transcription on your Fireflies dashboard. Additionally, switch on Auto-join and Share-all in your dashboard settings, as Fireflies needs these to keep unlimited transcription active.

Method 4: How to Transcribe a Google Meet Recording (After the Meeting)

If you missed setting up live transcription beforehand, there is still a way to get your notes. Using Fireflies, you can upload any saved Google Meet recording and get a full transcript, summary, and action items. Note that Gemini cannot transcribe a Google Meet recording after the call has ended. It only works during live calls and cannot process a previously saved recording to create notes or transcripts.

How to upload a Google Meet recording to Fireflies

  1. Open Google Drive and head to your Meet Recordings folder. Find the meeting you want and download the recording to your computer.
  2. Log into Fireflies.ai and open the Uploads section from the left-hand menu.
  3. Drag and drop your meeting file into the upload box. Fireflies accepts MP4, MP3, M4A, and WAV files.
  4. Check the language setting before processing so the AI can better pick up accents, names, and industry terminology.
  5. Start the upload and let Fireflies process the recording in the background. Most meetings take around 5 to 10 minutes.
  6. Once processing is complete, open your Fireflies Notebook to view the transcript, speaker labels, summaries, audio playback, and action items.

Note: Uploading saved recordings uses premium upload credits. Live transcription during meetings remains unlimited on the free plan.

Other options for transcribing a recorded Google Meet

If you need alternatives, dedicated transcription platforms and local media players with speech-to-text plugins can handle post-meeting file uploads. That said, most of these tools generate raw text only and do not provide summaries or action items. Fireflies remains the most complete option for turning a recorded Google Meet into something your team can actually use.

FAQs

Does Google Meet have automatic transcription?

Yes, Google Meet has automatic transcription for eligible Workspace plans. When activated, it transcribes spoken words in real time and labels each speaker. By default, the host needs to start it manually during the meeting. However, admins can configure it to start automatically for all scheduled calls through the Google Admin Console.

Is Google Meet transcription free?

Google Meet transcription is not free. To us this built-in transcription feature, you must have an eligible Google Workspace tier (such as Business Standard or Business Plus) or a Google One plan with 2TB or above storage.

If you are using a free standard Google account, you will have to use third-party AI notetakers or transcription tools to get automated meeting transcripts.

How do I get a transcript from a Google Meet recording?

There are two ways to get a transcript from a Google Meet recording.

  1. If transcription was enabled during the call, check your Google Drive for the transcript. You should find it saved as a Google Doc in your Meet Recordings folder, and a link will have been emailed to all hosts.
  2. If transcription was not enabled during the call, download the recording from your Google Drive and upload it to Fireflies. It will process the audio and deliver a full transcript and summary directly to your dashboard.

What happened to Google Meet's transcription feature?

Nothing happened to Google Meet's transcription feature. It is still there, but it now sits alongside Gemini's AI-powered notes. This causes some users to assume the feature is no longer available, when it is just tucked inside the Activities menu or restricted by your account plan.

How do I download a Google Meet transcript?

  • Go to your Google Drive and open the Meet Recordings folder
  • Find the transcript file for your meeting
  • Open it and click File in the top menu
  • Hover over Download and select Word, PDF, or plain text to begin the download

What is the best AI notetaker for Google Meet?

Fireflies is the best AI notetaker for Google Meet. It transcribes with 99% accuracy for English and 95% for other languages and generates meeting notes with action items and summaries after every call. The Chrome extension records from your browser without sending a separate bot into the call.

Can Fireflies transcribe Google Meet for free?

Yes, Fireflies can transcribe Google Meet for free. The free plan captures unlimited live meetings with 800 minutes of storage and generates summaries automatically. You can easily review, search, and copy your notes directly within the secure Fireflies dashboard at zero cost.
